Whats the difference between a regular MBA and an Executive MBA?

Can you answer Jack S’s question about MBA?:

I have seen different approaches to the MBA concept… obviously an accelerated one is faster to get, a part-time one is slower to get, and a regular one is just getting one… but what is an Executive MBA? I can’t find the difference between it and the other ones… Is it like an online class where you don’t have to be there in person because you are working as an executive?

MBA Feedback: Look at a school that offers both - say University of South Florida.

I think that in general, you’ll find that the “executive” MBA has a compressed curriculum - more covered in fewer class sessions, perhaps shortened courses, and they cost more. They are aimed at people who are already employed in some managerial capacity.

I’ve seen both types of degree offered online.

    Best of luck to you.

MBA Feedback: Check out Queens University in Kingston Ontario. They offer both, and now partner with Cornell University.

Typically the regular program is full time for a year or two, and the executive program is condensed over a period of weeks. but the programs keep evolving so just check it out on-line at the individual university sites.

MBA Feedback: You can’t get an MBA in a period of weeks. Unless it comes inside a box of cracker jack, that is.

Executive MBAs are usually programs that last between 12 and 28 months, where you spend between 1-3 weekends a moonth on campus for class sessions, and doing a fair amount of work either online or independently outside of class to bring to the next weekend.

The good ones (AACSB accredited) almost always cover the exact same material, but they offer the ability to hold down a full-time job, and complete coursework online and/or on the weekends.

At most schools, the two types of programs are issued diplomas that just say “Master of Business Administration” without mentioning the word “Executive”. Ask before enrolling if this matters to you.
